From the designer Professor Arlene Handschuch:
1000 PIECES: SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED is a wearable art coat incorporating approximately 1000 removable pieces that may be assembled to create a variety of surface designs. The concept is based on a jigsaw puzzle. The aesthetic inspiration came from ancient Chinese armor composed of small metal scales decoratively arranged and affixed to a background fabric. The coat is designed especially for those who enjoy assembling a jigsaw puzzle or creating their own unique designs.
The puzzle pieces forming the surface of 1000 PIECES are made from silk-screened printed paper that I laminated and hand-cut into one-inch squares. The papers include a metallic gold/black stripe, a metallic gold/silver herringbone, a metallic gold/black circle, and a metallic copper/black spiral. The pieces are backed with ½-inch self stick "hook" Velcro. They can be affixed, in whatever motif desired, to the coat I designed for this purpose. Flat-patternmaking techniques were used to create this mid-calf length coat which includes side panel stylelines, stand-up collar, and square dolman sleeves with overlay sleeve caps and sleeve cuffs. The side panels and sleeves are polyester crepe-backed satin; the front panels, back panels, sleeve caps, and sleeve cuffs were cut from "loop" Velcro fabric to which the puzzle pieces are stuck. All edges and seams of the front panels, back panels, and cuffs are trimmed with a woven braid. The coat is worn with a matching pair of crepe-backed satin pants.
I designed 1000 PIECES to be aesthetically attractive while at the same time entertaining for its owner to assemble and wear. It can be worn with the puzzle pieces arranged to fit any occasion or mood and to create any appearance from elegance to whimsy. Alternatively, it can be worn without any puzzle pieces as a stylish garment on its own. I anticipate further editions of the puzzle pieces that could be affixed to the same coat to create entirely new possibilities.
