Comments

Talk based on my current research on the merits of teaching Chinese short shorts in English translation. Chinese short shorts, read as series of slice-of-life snapshots of contemporary China, when taken together prove to be an invaluable, "non-totalizing," multi-vocal text that reveals the complex story contemporary Chinese are telling themselves about themselves. Participants, the majority of whom were Chinese natives, also produced written analysis of their favorite short shorts, which I collected for a qualitative study of the collection Loud Sparrows.
